2017 ARRT MRI Content Specifications Update

On January 1st 2017, the ARRT is implementing a new edition of their magnetic resonance imaging content specifications. If you are are planning to take your MRI registry exam during 2017, you may find it helpful to use the new edition of the ARRT MRI content specifications when preparing for your exam. So, what are some of the updates that take place in the 2017 edition?

Where can you  download the ARRT MRI Content Specifications?

The MRI content specifications outline the specific contents of the ARRT MRI registry exam, as well as the number of questions utilized within each content category. • Content Category Update : The pre-2017 edition contains 5 content categories; Patient Care, Imaging Procedures, Sequence Parameters and Options, Data Acquisition, and Physical Principles of Image Formation. The new 2017 edition contains 4 content categories; Patient Care, Safety, Image Production, and Procedures. The reduction in the amount of content categories does not appear to be due to the removal of subject matter, but instead appears to be the result of both combining and dividing some of the pre-2017 categories in order to improve organization. For example, in the pre-2017 edition both patient care and safety information were included in the "Patient Care" category, whereas this category appears to now be split into both a "Patient Care" and "Safety" section within the 2017 edition. Also, the pre-2017 categories labelled "Sequence Parameters and Options", "Data Acquisition and Processing", and "Physical Principles of Image Formation" appear to have been combined to form the category "Image Production" within the new 2017 edition of the ARRT MRI content specs. Overall, the new content category organization appears to be organized more clearly as there is now less subject matter overlap between categories (as compared to the prior version).
  • Number of Questions Update : The 2017 edition of the ARRT MRI content specs state that the MRI registry exam will contain a total of 200 questions, which is the same number of questions specified in the pre-2017 edition. At first glance, the 2017 edition of the content specifications may appear to have significant changes in regards to the number of questions designated to each content category. However, after observing closer, the difference in the number of questions dedicated to each category appears to be the result of the ARRT having combined and divided some of their prior sections. For instance, the "Patient Care" category from the pre-2017 edition of the MRI content specifications used to have 32 questions. This section has now been divided into both a "Patient Care" and "Safety" section consisting of 17 questions and 15 questions respectively (which totals the same 32 questions that were designate to patient care prior to the update). Also, there is now an "Image Production" section that contains 112 questions. In the pre-2017 edition this section of the ARRT MRI content specs was defined by the "Sequence Parameters and Options", "Data Acquisition and Processing", and "Physical Principles of Image Formation" sections, each containing 38, 34, and 40 questions respectively (which totals to the same 112 questions that are designated to image production in the 2017 updated edition). Overall, the number of questions designated to the subject matter listed within the ARRT MRI content specifications does not appear to have changed, but instead, have been re-organized to fit the new structure of the content specifications.

What are the ARRT MRI Content Specifications?

The ARRT MRI content specifications are a list of magnetic resonance imaging categories and sub-categories that specify the subject matter covered on the ARRT's MRI registry examination. When creating the content specifications, the ARRT aims to identify the knowledge areas and cognitive skills typically required by entry-level MRI technologists. Through nationwide practice analysis studies, the ARRT, as well as hundreds of professionals, work hard to accurately identify the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate those preparing to start their career as an MRI technologist. The ARRT plays an integral part in ensuring quality education and patient care within the field of medical imaging.
